Serve The Lord!

John 13:1-17, 34-35


You can serve without loving but you cannot love without serving. Jesus taught that being his disciple calls for loving and serving others in the church and in the world at large. We love and serve the Lord by loving and serving others.

There are three compelling reasons why we should want to serve God.

1. Jesus gave us a model to follow.
• His action comes from knowing with certainty that his personal mission on earth will soon end (v. 1).
• He was their teacher and Lord, yet he washed his disciples’ feet (v. 13).
• It takes humility and grace to serve others as well as to allow others to serve us.

2. Jesus gave us a mandate to obey.
• He commanded us to love and to serve others just like he did, vv. 12-16, 34.
• He promised a blessing to those who love and serve others, v. 17.
• It takes knowing God more to want to serve God more.

3. Jesus gave us a mission to fulfill.
• He never lost sight of his purpose: “to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)
• He wanted his disciples to be known by the way they treated each other (v. 35).
• It takes genuinely changed Christians to convince the world about Christ.

Tips on serving the Lord for the first time:
• Get to know the various ministries available in the church.
• Try the least intimidating low-profile ministry for a short period of time.
• Discover your SHAPE as you try different ministries.
