Service based, Product based, Investment Banks, FAANG or startup ?
There are broadly four types of IT companies in India. We will also go more deep into each categories here -
Service based - There are big service companies in India, each of them have 1 Lakh plus employees. The companies are TCS, Infosys, Wipro, IBM India, HCL. They recruit in heavy numbers fresh graduates and train them and put in projects. They are one of the most easiest to get in.But 50% of the projects are manual testing or Production support and as i told earlier, these verticals destroy career. So, get out of them as early as possible. The second type of service companies are medium level companies with 10K employees and they are one of the best to work for as the projects are very good and 100% development projects. These companies also have employees working as contractor for FAANG.
Product based - They are companies which makes products like Cisco, Zoho, SAP labs, Attlasian. And yes all big to medium product based companies have development centers in India. They generally have good work-life balance, but are somewhat hard to get in. They ask a bit of DS and Algo also in their recruitment process. Startup - India is one of the top startup ecosystem in the world. We have 2 person startups also and Unicorns like Byju, Flipkart, PayTM, Uber, Ola also. Now, any type of startup have a lot of work pressure as they work on a deadline. But you will grow the most in them and have the best time of your life. The recruitment process of a normal startup is quite different then Unicorns. The recruitment process of these Unicorns are mostly like FAANG and heavy DS and Algo based. The startup only want people to have one skill and that in ReactJS and it's ecosystem. So, you have a lots of jobs for ReactJS in them. Their are service based starups also, which are 2-50 person agencies doing small to medium projects.
Investment Banks and Others - All investment bank have their technology centers in India, like JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley. Most of the jobs in them are Support job because the systems are still legacy which requires a lot of monitoring 24x7. But slowly they are moving and some modern development jobs are also their. But any company which have some tech, also have a tech center in India.
FAANG - It stands for Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netlflix and Google and are considered the best tech companies on the planet. They have the most talented people, so to get in is very difficult. They have multiple rounds, with a heavy DS and Algo round. They pay the best in the world, even in the tech centers in India. The work-life balance depends on the company, but your tech thirst will be fulfilled here and you will not only be working on the latest tech, but also be creating them.
