Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Philip Walkley, Executive Director of Service Over Self (SOS), who shares some of the history and evolution over the years for the Memphis, Tennessee-based nonprofit with a mission "to glorify God by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in underserved neighborhoods through home repair and leadership development.
During the interview, Philip talks about their Spring and Summer Group programs, which are immersive service experiences for students where they assist with neighborhood revitalization and home repairs for those in need while enhancing their leadership skills. He also talks about an important pivot that took place where SOS is focused on supporting local youth with paid job skills training and employment to make needed home repairs in their neighborhoods, and how that is creating an increased sense of ownership in the community and more opportunities for future employment. Philip also talks about ways the community can support their efforts and get involved.
