James used a word that compares believers' various trials with a refiner's fire, which burns away impurities (1Pet. 1:6-7) God's ultimate goal in testing is that our faith becomes "mature and complete." If you want to stop being tossed about, rely on God to show you what is best for you. Ask him for wisdom, and trust that he will give it to you. Then your decision will be sure and solid!!
