16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. 20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
30As He was saying these things, many believed in him. 31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my'" ord, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 33They answered him, 'We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, 'You will become free'?" 34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Key points in John 8:30-36:
6The Lord said to Cain, 'Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7Ifyou do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it."
12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
2. Jesus came to SET the CAPTIVES FREE.
Application:
1. Don't UNDERESTIMATE the power of sin:
a. To ENSLAVE
b. To DESTROY
2. CELEBRATE your freedom in Christ.
17But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
3. LONG for all the GOOD things God has for you.
12I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Jesus came to set us free so we could have a CHOICE. Who will be your MASTER?
