The Return to Order Moment

Setting The Medieval Record Straight

Listen Later

For centuries, academics taught that the terms “medieval” and “dark ages” could be used interchangeably. One meant the other and vice versa. According to these scholars, the world of the Roman Empire was marvelous. As the Empire fell, the superstitions of the Catholic Church prevailed. Only with the Renaissance did the lights of scholarship shine once again.
This version of history was never true, but it did fit into the humanist mindset. It allows them to pretend that their heroes – the thinkers of the Renaissance and the so-called Enlightenment – brought humanity back from a wretched existence as virtual slaves living in mud huts.
In our present age, many scholars are re-examining the Medieval world. This podcast examines three surprising aspects of Medieval life, including the role of women, art, and cleanliness.
