Do the humane laws of modern nations derive from English Common Law? This is often asserted. Are modern concepts of fair play and humane treatment of others the result of the slowly evolving trial-and-error improvement of standards of behavior? Maybe it was the Age of Reason. Or should we thank the Enlightenment?
