Severe Storms, Measles Case, and Busy Weekend Ahead for Kyle, Texas

Listen Later

Kyle, Texas woke up today to the echoes of a wild weather night. On Thursday evening, severe storms tore through the area, pelting neighborhoods with hailstones measuring one to two inches near Kyle and San Marcos and, in some spots, even reaching baseball size. The storm’s fierce winds clocked in at over 60 miles per hour, flipping small planes at the San Marcos airport and shattering car windows and sunroofs from Martindale to Maxwell and the east side of Kyle. Despite these dramatic scenes, Friday brought a stark change, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures quickly climbing into the upper 90s and pushing toward 100 as we head into Saturday. For those making Memorial Day weekend plans, stay alert for the late-day chance of storms on Sunday and a potential cold front with more rain by Monday.

In health news, Hays County has reported its first measles case in years, prompting the health department to alert anyone who may have visited Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle on May 16 between 12:50 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to monitor for symptoms. The patient, an unvaccinated adult likely infected by an extended family member, is now recovering and no longer contagious. Health officials are working to notify anyone potentially exposed at several local businesses, including H-E-B Plus, Kohls-Sephora, and CommuniCare Kyle Clinic earlier this month.

On a lighter note, excitement is building as the 2025 Kyle Fair A Tex-Travaganza kicks off tonight. Locals are dusting off their boots for what promises to be the town’s biggest celebration of the year, rolling through the weekend with live music, food, and fun for everyone.

While pollen counts and air quality readings for today were unavailable, it is always wise to take precautions if you have allergies, especially in the wake of last night’s storms, which tend to stir up pollen and dust.

Whether you’re headed to the fair or simply shaking off last night’s hail, Kyle residents can look forward to hot, sunny weather and a holiday weekend buzzing with activity. Stay safe, enjoy the festivities, and keep an umbrella handy just in case those Memorial Day storms sneak in.
