Publisher's Summary:
It is 1942, and the Second World War has been going on for three wearying years. Work is hard and hours long in the four Ulster mills in Northern Ireland where Alex Hamilton struggles to keep overworked machines going, just as his wife Emily tries to provide food and comfort not only for their own son and daughters, but for the many young American soldiers stationed nearby.
Bad news comes daily, with the sinking of merchant ships and Allied reverses in the Far East and North Africa, but there is still a welcome for friends and strangers and moments of unexpected happiness at even the darkest of times.

Shadow on the land
Wartime in Northern Ireland, where at this point apparently a quarter of the population was American. The GIs landed here and did training before moving on to the south coast of Britain or elsewhere.
A local woman and mother, and the manager of the textile mill, learn to cope with being overworked, over stressed, overanxious about serving children, and underfed. They cope with sabotage, traffic accidents, orphaned children, bombed out families, rationing of all sorts, growing food. For entertainment they had not much but letters.
I enjoyed the attention to small detail, much of which the author says was recalled for her by people she interviewed. The countryside comes to life well. This is the first of this series I have read and I expect anyone following the story would enjoy it but newcomers will find this one very readable.
This is an unbiased review.
The novel's greatest strength is the characters
This is the first of the Hamilton novels that Iâve read. Despite first meeting the Hamilton clan in the middle of the series, I had no trouble picking up the threads of the story and the charactersâ lives. The story is told through Emily Hamiltonâs eyes as she experiences the changes and upheavals that war brings to her home and community and she must find the strength to deal with them. Set in County Down, outside Belfast, Northern Ireland it is a gently paced journey through the Second World War years. Nevertheless, events in the story still pack a punch and Emily isnât spared worry or heartache. Itâs a captivating glimpse into Ulster life in the era and a heartwarming story of family and community. The novelâs greatest strength is the cast of true to life characters that lingered in my mind after I read the last page. Now that Iâve met the Hamilton clan I want to know where life will lead them.
A new fan of Anne Doughty's books!
A most interesting and captivating book and a part of the Hamilton Saga! Anne Doughty brings one into the Hamilton family and the Ulster countryside with her vivid descriptions. She makes me feel as though I am living with the characters. I have read 3 of her books so far, and hope to read all of them very soon.
