Once a happy family man, Kealan now spends his days walking aimlessly and crashing in his friend's spare room. It never seems to matter how much he walks, because his shadow is always there. How is it that some things inevitably tie together? And where does one's shadow lead to?

An enjoyable dark and thought-provoking read
This is another solidly written story by Trent Zelazny. I've now read 5 of his stories and look forward to reading more!
In this dark tale, we experience life after an unthinkable tragedy has occurred for the main character, Kealan. While this is a work of fiction, it definitely has a true to life portrayal of the darkness of life and the despair one would feel after having their whole life turned upside down.
I highly recommend this and all of Zelazny's works!
"The cat's got nothing to do with it, remember? Leave the cat out of it."
True to life tale
Shadowboxer is a true to life tale of Kealan, who is healing from a personal tragedy. The story also weaves themes of how we treat others and how we treat ourselves. There is an honesty in Zelazny's writing that draws the reader into relating and caring for the characters . I would say Shadowboxer is a gritty story of a man doing his best to conquer his personal demons and learning to live again.
*** REELING AGAINST THE ROPES ***
Shadowboxer is a black novella that will one-two punch you in the gut, roundhouse clobber you in the kidneys, and finish you off with a flurry of dark jabs and hooks that will leave you reaching for a bottle, or some Prozac, or that fuzzy VHS copy of Pollyanna. Anything to shake off the gloom.
Honestly, Trent Zelazny is starting to scare me a little. We talk about this writer's or that writer's latest offering, and how that writer is "working at the top of his form." Well, I'm not sure Zelazny has a lower position in his form. He seems to do what he does so effortlessly...well, it's scary. And encouraging. If this writer doesn't slow down (and he better not) those of us who enjoy immersion in a convincingly shadowy world have much to look forward to.
Shadowboxer is a knockout, from start to finish. Zelazny may well be the rightful heir to the dark landscape of fiction perfected by Cornell Woolrich--yes, he's that good.
Zelazny Doesn't Disappoint
Sometimes when reading Trent Zelazny King comes to mind. Not because Zelazny writes like King or swims in the same genre but because of how wonderful he is at creating characters--good and bad--and making their feelings and emotions bleed off the page. Most avid readers know King is tops when it comes to characters, so is Zelazny. Zelazny is also consistent, each work as fantastic as the last. Shadowboxer is no different, and when you strap in to ride along with Kealan as he deals with a haunting past, self-loathing,hope, and even a chance at redemption, you can't help but be absorbed by this read, and be in awe of such talent.
Haunting
Shadowboxer by the amazingly talented Trent Zelazny is a melancholy, haunting, and beautiful tale of loss. The main character's path from the darkest depths to beginning the process of healing will leave you breathless for more. I felt sympathy for Kealan.
