Shane was last seen at Martin Luther King Jr. Towers' playground in Manhattan, New York on August 10, 1989. Shane was sitting on a bench eating potato chips with his mother, Rosa Glover, when two children approached him and asked if he wanted to play. Rosa allowed the children, a ten year old girl and her five year old brother, to push Shane on the swing while she sat nearby.

While the children were playing on the slide, a man sat down beside Rosa and began speaking to her about crime. He mentioned abduction; saying "things happen to children". Rosa then got distracted by looking at the man's scars, which he claimed were from fighting, and when she looked up the children were gone.

The children returned through a hole in the park fence. After they explained that they'd left Shane in the park Rosa immediately took them to the police station to report her son missing.
