In this episode, we interviewed Shannon Read, a female tattooist who specialises in tattooing women.
Shannon shared her experiences working in a male-dominated tattoo industry, which lead her to create her own female-friendly tattoo studio, and told us about everything she’s learnt from her 10+ years of experience tattooing female clients.
We discussed: women tend to underestimate themselves and their strength, women are conditioned to suppress their pain, lack of diversity in shapes and sizes of female bodies modelling tattoo designs, women feel sorry too much, women are overly self-critical, unrealistic beauty standards that put pressure on women, and the differences between tattooing men vs. women.
She also shares everything she’s learnt from her experiences tattooing female clients who are mothers - they’re often women who never get any time to do anything for themselves, and feel guilty whenever they do! And as a busy working mother herself, she shares her own advice on some things women can do to make sure they’re also looking after themselves, rather than always prioritising looking after everyone around them!
Shannon also leaves us with an important message about how getting a tattoo can be something really empowering for a woman to do for herself, as a way to reclaim her own autonomy and power.
