The story follows a spaceship of Glom arriving in Earth's orbit with a mission: to place a displacer in one of Earth's atomic reactors, opening a wormhole for an invasion. However, previous expeditions have failed. The commander, Pid, warns his crewmates Ger and Ilg about maintaining their designated shapes, as their society enforces strict caste rules on what forms they can take.
