Dozens of shark deterrent products are marketed in Australia, from magnetic bands to electric fields and bite-resistant wetsuits, but with no national safety standard it's difficult to determine which are effective. While some electric deterrents have been independently proven to work and Western Australia offers rebates for scientifically validated products, experts warn that small wearable magnets create limited magnetic fields and no technology can completely eliminate the risk of shark attacks, particularly from great white sharks.
