Researchers from the University of Wollongong are developing shark deterrent technology that can be fitted into surfboard fins, with the first prototype expected by the end of this year. The technology emits electromagnetic fields that disrupt the electro receptors in sharks, creating a deterrent radius of one to five metres without harming marine animals. Backed by $2.5 million in funding, the innovation aims to reduce deadly shark encounters in Australian waters.
