Remembering Carol Channing, Georges Loinger, Mel Stottlemyre
Carol Channing was the Broadway star who created one memorable role as Lorelei Lee in 1949 for “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and then created an even bigger role as Dolly Levi in 1964 for Hello Dolly! Both roles made her an international star. Georges Loinger was a French physical education teacher during World War II who smuggled hundreds of Jewish children to safety in Switzerland. Mel Stottlemyre was a brilliant pitcher for the New York Yankees in the mid 1960’s and early 1970’s who went on to become a atop-flight pitching coach for the Yankees and the New York Mets
