Growing up in Dallas, we had a neighborhood hero — Brother Williams.
The elders called him Brother Williams, so we did too. And he was larger than life: big voice, big laugh, big dignity. But more than that — he made us feel big.
He’d see you and thunder your name like it came with destiny: “Freddie!” And suddenly you weren’t just some kid… you were somebody.
And Brother Williams backed it up. Owned land. Owned his house. And get this — he owned a gas station in Highland Park in the 1940s. When most folks from our neighborhood could only sweep floors there, he pumped the gas, fixed the cars and signed the front of the checks.
He once stood toe-to-toe with a Klansman who tried to intimidate him. Brother Williams didn’t blink. He stood his ground, sent that man running with his face all red — And commanded him, “Don’t come back!” On our block, courage had a name: Brother Williams.
And today, when I read Proverbs 31:16 —
— I hear echoes of Brother Williams.
📖 The Bible’s Super Woman
“She goes to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard.” (NLT)
Listen closely to that:She inspects a field —
She buys it —
With her own earnings She plants a vineyard —
Do you see any interesting patterns?
What about this: She did all of these things in a world where women didn’t choose property — women were property.
This was written in a world where women had almost zero legal agency — treated like property…not purchasers of property.
So what do you call poetry like that? This was holy imagination subverting the social order:
Every “impossible” thing we’ve ever lived to see started with imagination.
“What if?” became “It can.” “It can” became “It will.” “It will” became “I planted that vineyard.”
She didn’t wait for permission. She didn’t ask for a cosign. She saw it, bought it, built it.
🌍 Modern Mirror
From fields to vineyards. From sit-ins to senate seats. From owning a gas station in Jim Crow Dallas… to the first female Prime Minister of Japan elected in 2024.
Meanwhile, America—still hitting that “remind me later” button on electing our woman president. 👀 We love progress — just not when it shows up in heels, apparently.
But make no mistake — the seed’s already in the soil. And seeds do what seeds do: they rise.
Call Up
So if this archetypal Proverbs 31 superwoman could walk in power in a world that denied her, you — with all you have access to — better not doubt what God put in you.
Inspect your field. Buy it. Plant something in it.
🎤 Remember
Faith doesn’t just pray for fruit Faith buys the dirt.
Prayer
God, water my imagination till seeds stand up like trees.
Today’s Challenge
Before the day ends:
✅ Write one dream that scares you ✅ Identify the “field” connected to it ✅ Take one tiny step toward planting
Open a tab. Price a class. Sketch a plan. Vineyards begin as verbs.
Inspect. Buy. Plant.
