Garry Abbott // When asked which commandment was greatest, Jesus responds with a child’s first prayer—the Shema. This prayer is based in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, in which Israel is commanded to love the Lord their God with everything in them. This kind of whole-hearted love requires me to submit every part of myself to God—not just everything except my anger, or my addiction, or my fear, or what I eat and drink.
To withhold any one of these parts would make love occasional. But love was never meant to be an occasional act. It wasn’t for God, and it shouldn’t be for us.
