Garry Abbott // When asked what commandment is the greatest, Jesus quotes a verse every Hebrew child would have memorized. Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. But what is our “strength?” Is it muscles? Is it money? The word the Hebrews used was me’od, which means “very” or “muchness.”
We’re supposed to love God with our muchness. Why do we translate it strength? It’s a call to love God with everything we possess strongly. Love God with our strong influence, our strong curiosity, our strong compassion, our strong faith. We love God with every single thing he has given us much of.
