Sermon Notes—“Overcomers - Shepherding God's Flock
We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text

1 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
1 Peter 5:1–4 (NASB95)

Who is Peter addressing?

The ELDERS.
Each church had elders whose responsibility was to lead the church.
Another name for elder is PASTOR. (Eph 4:11-12)

What does he want them to do?

Shepherd God’s flock.
Elders are SPIRITUALLY GIFTED to shepherd the local church.
It’s not a natural gift or talent. Shepherding is exercising oversight of God’s people, which includes provision, protection, and DIRECTION.
Someone who exercises oversight is called an OVERSEER (1 Tim 3:1-2).

Therefore Pastor = Elder = Shepherd = Overseer = Bishop.
Different terms that describe the same office in the church. (Acts 20:17, 28)
17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. 28 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
Acts 20:17, 28 (NASB95)

If Jesus gifted some in the church to be shepherds, that means: we NEED them, because we’re just like SHEEP!

How does he want them to do it? “not under compulsion but voluntarily”

Shepherd because they’re CALLED, not coerced. “not for sordid gain, but with eagerness”
Shepherd passionately whether they’re PAID or not. “nor lording it over … but proving to be examples”
Shepherd CLOSE enough that others can follow you.

What can faithful elders look forward to?

When the Chief Shepherd arrives they’ll be UNEMPLOYED, with BENEFITS!

Feelings do not drive us...Faith drives us.
