When Anthony "Tony" Mitchell was taken into police custody on January 12, 2023, his family was promised a mental health evaluation and help detoxing. Instead, he died of hypothermia while in custody 14 days later. The Walker County Alabama Sheriff's Office, long known for their problematic dealings with the community, immediately claimed innocence. So far, over a dozen employees of the jail and sheriff's office have pled guilty for their parts in his murder.
