Publisher's Summary:
A home invasion results in property damage. Children disappear and a disgruntled ex-employee is suspected. Girl visits relative, walks in on scene of carnage. A man searches for days, seeking his lost love. A young woman accuses her father's wife of attempted murder. Dramatic news from CNN? Stories ripped from today's headlines? No, they are cases investigated by Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his intrepid companion and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson.
Drawn into the dark underbelly of folk tale reality, Holmes and Watson travel the streets of London and into the far English countryside to discover the truth about some of the most famous accounts found in childhood literature. Described in Dr. Watson's inimitable style and with the names changed to protect the innocent, these tales recount how Sherlock Holmes investigated cases involving missing children, a trio of brothers threatened with destruction, and the contents of an ancient box that told a tale of heroism and death.
Enter the world of the world's first consulting detective. Stand again in Baker Street and look up at the windows of 221B. That shadow on the blind, is it Lestrade, coming to tell of a baffling case he has failed to solve? Or is it Mrs. Hudson, bring tea and sandwiches to a suffering client? Could it be the Great Detective himself, pacing up and down the length of the room, wrapping his mighty brain around yet another conundrum presented for his consideration? Join Dr. Watson in these adventures and you'll never think the same about folk tales and nursery rhymes again.

arrived today! ive only skimmed this book (i ordered both volumes and this is the 2nd) but it looks promising. i love holmes and i love folklore so these will undoubtedly be enjoyed!
An intriguing collection . . . .
âSherlock Holmes and the Folk Tale Mysteriesâ Vol. I by Gayle Lange Puhl is an intriguing collection of thirteen Holmes adventures, wherein Our Heroes become involved in a number of cases that have certain aspects resembling well known stories from childhood.
In the introduction, the author asks âWhat place can Sherlock Holmes have in the world of folk tales?â It turns out that Holmes can contribute quite a bit. Each of these stories is well-written in the traditional Canonical manner, and just as important, they are set within the correct time frame, and not in some modern world with cell phones and big hair.
I believe my favorite tale was âThe Case of the Weary Wandererâ, in which reminds one a bit of the story of Cinderella, but with a twist. The best of these stories are the ones that have aspects of the original folk tales, but have enough original twists that they become their own independent stories. There are three stories that are a little too âon the noseâ â referring specifically to âGoldilocks,â or to the very similar-to-fairy-tale-names of âRumpel Stiltskinâ or Humphrey Dumfreyâ. Seeing as how this is designated âVolume Oneâ, I assume that more stories are to follow. Iâm very much looking forward to them, but might I suggest to the author that future references to such obvious character names be toned down a bit in the next entries?
All in all, this was a very fun book, and a very unique way to present some new Holmes stories.
