1) Everything starts in & from the HEART.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Deuteronomy 6:5 (ESV)

3 Reasons My Heart is Critical:

  • It brings me to SALVATION.

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. Romans 10:9-10 (ESV)

  • It is the WELLSPRING of life

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

  • It’s crucial to my OBEDIENCE to God.

14But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.” (Deuteronomy 30:14, ESV)

2) KNOW the differences between my heart & soul.

SHOW CIRCLES ON CUE – SOCIAL (things that impact my worldview), BODY (won’t talk about much, but important), SOUL.

Soul = mind, will, emotion

Heart =

·                 Mind –Eph. 1:18

·                 Will –  Jeremiah 18:12

·                 Emotion – 2 Cor. 2:4

Mind –

8which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight” (Ephesians 1:8, ESV)

Will –

12“But they say, ‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’” (Jeremiah 18:12, ESV)

Emotion –

4For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.” (2 Corinthians 2:4, ESV)

So What’s The Difference?

  • I am “A LIVING SOUL”

Soul used of person – we are souls

  • I have A HEART

Never used of whole person, but of something the person possesses, used in the sense of conscience – the Hebrew has no word for conscience.

  • My heart is the CENTER of my soul.

It’s the Nexus – or the controller or the Flux Capacitor of the soul!

3) How does my heart get MESSED UP?

  •  Because I’m a FALLEN SOUL.

9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, ESV)

  • Because I make BAD CHOICES.

3And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”” (2 Samuel 11:3, ESV)

4) How Can I Get My Heart Right Again?

  • Pray for God to TEST MY HEART

3The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts.” (Proverbs 17:3, ESV)

  • Learn to avoid COMPARTMENTALIZATION

11Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11, ESV)

  • Let God BREAK my heart.

8For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. 9Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” (2 Corinthians 1:8–9, ESV)

17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17, ESV)

  • INTEGRATE my life in Christ.

9making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” (Ephesians 1:9–10, ESV)

11Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11, ESV)

…Put me together, one heart and mind; then, undivided, I'll worship in joyful fear. Psalms 86:11 (MSG)

  • Learn to do two things with what hurts me

  • FEEL it.

3For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah 5I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah” (Psalm 32:3–5, ESV)

  • LET IT GO  to God.

1The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;” (Isaiah 61:1, ESV)
