Donald Trump says the US will temporarily “run” Venezuela until there is a “safe” transition, after a US operation in Caracas that reportedly led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.

Venezuela has declared a national emergency and condemned the strikes, while US officials say Maduro and Flores have been moved into US custody to face federal charges in New York, including narco-terrorism and cocaine trafficking allegations.
