Jesus says, “The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed.” Maybe this means that something small and unassuming will grow to be great, but a mustard shrub isn’t exactly a giant cedar. Maybe Jesus wanted us to focus on the birds that rest in the branches, or the person who scattered or sowed the seed. Parables are meant to be a bit enigmatic, and the absence of anyone telling us exactly what they mean is part of what keeps them at the forefront of our faith. As we begin a new sermon series on some of the parables that Jesus has given us, we explore some of what these provocative short stories have meant and could mean for us today. One thing is for sure, they are not tame bedtime stories.
