Many believe that African-American adolescents are more aggressive due to Black parents pulling back on “whooping their children.” Sparing the rod and spoiling your child. Many believe that we are allowing Mainstream White America to push THEIR belief systems onto us. KNOWING that we operate underneath an entirely different set of standards.

A lot of you that are 35 and over remember getting whooped with a belt, a shoe, one of the orange Hot Wheels tracks, or asked to go and get three switches from the tree in the backyard which would make you look like a melanated Tony the Tiger, striped from head-to-toe, when all was said and done.

We saw it as normal.

We saw our whoopings as a necessary evil.

And that’s just the way things were.

But just because we SAW it as normal…

Doesn’t mean it was RIGHT. Or was it?
