On 4th of August 1967, the South African government introduced compulsory conscription, where all young white men from the age of 18 were forced to serve time in the South African National Defence Force. Deferment to complete schooling or a university degree was granted, but hardly any White men were exempt from conscription. Yesterday we spoke to one of our listeners Hugh from Durban, who was sharing his experience as a young man in the military and how military conscription was key in the apartheid. Should South Africa bringing back mandatory national service for both young men and women, where they can basically learn useful skills and be doing some community engagement, to keep them off the streets and out of trouble.
