A Colorado-based firm called Biofire has launched the world's first "smart gun" that uses a life-saving fingerprint unlocking system, preventing unauthorized access. The cutting-edge 9mm handgun is designed to improve gun safety in America, where gun control legislation remains largely stalled. It unlocks in less than a second, using either a fingerprint or facial recognition sensor, and locks again quickly when not in use. The gun locks out everyone except the owner and users specifically approved by the owner, a technology that could help prevent everything from school shootings to accidents and suicides, reps from the company said. While the company does not claim that the Biofire Smart Gun can prevent every instance of firearm misuse, it believes that the tool can help prevent some firearm suicides, accidents, and injuries from occurring. The Biofire smart gun sells for $1,499.
