Shukai Ep 8.5: ‘No Game No Life: Zero’ World Premiere
Join Bryant and Tyler as they discuss the Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) and the world premiere of ‘No Game No Life: Zero.’ Not only that, but Sentai Filmworks and the film festival brought us a very special presentation of the first anime film in existence. 100 years of anime, here’s to 100 years more!
Below I have information on the film, ‘The Dull Sword,’ LA-AFF, Sentai Filmworks, and Hurricane Harvey relief fund.
Synopsis:
Six thousand years before Sora and Shiro were even a blink in the history of Disboard, war consumed the land, tearing apart the heavens, destroying stars, and even threatening to wipe out the human race. Amid the chaos and destruction, a young man named Riku leads humanity toward the tomorrow his heart believed in. One day, in the ruins of an Elf city, he meets Shuvi, a female exiled “Ex-machina” android who asks him to teach her what it means to have a human heart.

The film runs 106 minutes long and is a prequel to the 12 episode long series, No Game No Life, from 2014. This film has been long awaited and I can tell you: it is amazing. Currently, the anime series is rated an 8.43 on MyAnimeList.net and beloved by Tyler and the Shukai crew. Fans are STILL awaiting news from Madhouse to announce season 2…
For the World Premiere event, we saw the ‘Dubbed’ version, which we discuss in the podcast. It was exciting because we got to meet and hear a Q&A with Scott Gibbs, Caitlynn French, ADR Director Kyle Colby Jones, and producer Sho Tanaka!
Gibbs voices Riku for NGNL:Zero and Sora in the series.

Namakura Gatana (なまくら刀) or Hanawa Hekonai meitō no maki (塙凹内名刀之巻) is a short Japanese animated film produced by Jun’ichi Kōuchi in 1917. It was found in an antique shop in Osaka in central Japan in March 2008.[1] This film is a 2-minute silent short that tells a history about a samurai‘s foolish purchase of a dull-edged sword. It was released on June 30, 1917.

The Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF), presented by international creative company Rydgen Inc. in partnership with L.A. based film distribution company Azoland Pictures, is North America’s biggest anime film festival. The LA-AFF is a three day event which showcases over 20 anime films including recently released hits from Japan and fan favorite classics.
