Sickle Cell Complications

Listen Later

When should you worry about acute chest syndrome or stroke in a patient with sickle cell disease? In this episode, we review common complications of sickle cell disease, including key exam findings, the diagnostic workup, and management. What antibiotics should you start, and why does functional asplenia matter in this population? We’ll also discuss pain management strategies, including how to safely administer opioids via a PCA. Finally, we will address how disparities in care continue to impact patients with sickle cell disease.
