Sickness Squad

The large white room was antiseptic in both smell and appearance. The tiled floor was the color of endless space, and it’s freshly waxed gloss held smeared visions of cold light from the LED bulbs overhead, that were pocketed in white-painted fixtures. Various computer terminals lined the walls, and their cluster of monitors displayed information in dense hieroglyphic symbols, and racing white text filled with various formulae, and words passing six syllables. Each terminal was staffed by two or more pointing, speaking, or wildly gesticulating scientists clad in the ruffled baggage of white hazard suits, the plastic on their face shields shining as they flitted here and there across the night-sky tile, as it shone the hazy reflected orbs of light as though they were constellations. And what if they were? What if the night-sky tile really was that great blanket that held the stars? If such a thing were true, then surely that which was in the center of the room was the blackhole that sucked, and pulled everything toward it, starting with the snaking bundle of wires that trailed from each computer terminal into a mid-sized center console that was itself, hooked into something else, the black hole: a large open faced rectangular coffin of translucent glass, filled with a cerulean-blue liquid. Submerged in the liquid’s depths, white as bleached coral, slept a nude old man hooked up to a spider web of wires and sensors. Suddenly the blast doors on the far side of the room opened with a deep hiss, and in walked two older women. The one in the lead and with the long stride, was recognized by the scientists as Chief Researcher Karen Shen. The woman who trailed closely behind, was not instantly recognizable but her visitors badge said: Anita Dunn. Karen spoke as the two women made their way to the glass coffin. “Yes the neurological degeneration is a concern,” Karen said, “but that’s going to require more time Anita, SKD understands, surely. Was it so long ago that you *strong-armed* us into cutting R&D time on that ocular rejuvenation procedure? We’ve all seen the debate, the red eye fiasco was *trending* all over social media. Make no mistake Anita, when science is rushed...it always ends in blood.” “Spare me the melodrama Karen..” Anita said with disdain, “SKD recognizes your work, how's our man?” “Well...” Karen said with excitement, “Since a hearing-aid will damage media optics, you told us to get creative and... we did.” Anita made an impatient twirling motion with her hand, and Karen continued, “In short, it's some of our most innovative work yet.” Karen tapped a clipboard-toting attendant on the shoulder and whispered, “Wake him up!” The attendant tapped a button on the center console, a series of beeps followed this action and like a ghost ship rising from the fathoms, Joe Biden creaked his way up from the liquid, coughing and sputtering. The two women stared at him: Karen with glittering pride, and Anita in mouth covering horror. “Oh my god!” Anita exclaimed, and then she gave Karen a harsh whisper, “Why did you make them so big!?” “Don’t bother whispering,” Karen replied, “Joe Biden hears you.” Topics On Today's Episode Include: Venessa Hudgens, Plague World, Joe Biden Hears You and Update From the Sickness Squad!
