Rambam Bekius

Side-quest: Can Individual Angels Exist? (Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah 2:5-8)

This afternoon (12/29/20 at YBT) we went on a little side-quest in an attempt to answer a question we raised yesterday. The Rambam raised the question: How can angels be differentiated from each other if they aren't physical, since it would seem that non-physical things can only be differentiated based on corporeal qualities? He then answers by saying that angels are on different "levels" based on their knowledge, and proceeds to enumerate the ten levels of angels. Our question was: it's very nice to say that there are ten "types" of angels, but how can there be individual angels within each type? We decided to consult the only book on angelology I own, the author of which was an Aristotelian and usually makes for a good companion commentary to Aristotelian texts in the writings of the Rishonim. Sadly, we were unable to answer our question based on what he wrote here. Perhaps we'll find an answer elsewhere!

I chose to end the recording after this because I'm sure some people just want to do Rambam Bekius, and this is too far afield.

Bekius Disclaimer:
Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. Each session consists of us reading through the Rambam's writings together without much preparation on my part, and without going into depth by consulting commentaries or primary sources. For all these reasons, there are bound to be inaccuracies, errors, and other types of shortcomings which would not be acceptable in a prepared shiur, but are quite typical of a bekius chavurah. Please bear this in mind, and know what you're signing up for when you listen!
