In this episode of Silent No Longer with Mesha Paul, I sit down with Julie Turner, founder of The Movement Effect, a nonprofit bringing trauma-informed fitness and wellness services into domestic violence shelters for mothers and children.
Julie shares her own experience of surviving an abusive relationship and what happened after she got physically safe. She began experiencing PTSD, heart palpitations, anxiety, and physical sensations that made her believe something was seriously wrong with her body. Over time, she discovered that movement—especially dance—helped her body feel grounded and calm. Pasted text
We have a very real conversation about the nervous system, fight-or-flight, psychological abuse, boundaries, dating after abuse, and why healing doesn't always look the way we expect it to. We also talk about that strange transition from living in constant chaos to finally being safe—and realizing your body may still be responding as though the danger is there. Pasted text
Julie explains that healing through movement doesn't mean everyone needs to dance or go to the gym. It can be walking, yoga, Pilates, swimming, lifting weights, or simply finding a way of moving that makes your body feel good, grounded, and connected again. Pasted text
This episode is an honest reminder that leaving an abusive relationship may bring you to safety, but healing can continue long after you leave.
💜 Your body has been through the story with you. It deserves to be part of the healing, too.
Real People. Real Stories. Real Hope.

What happens when shame convinces you that you have to suffer in silence?
In this powerful episode of Silent No Longer with Mesha Paul, Mia Godfrey shares her journey from growing up under Romania’s communist regime to battling grief, addiction, abusive relationships, and the deep belief that she was unworthy of love. After losing her father at 18, Mia turned to alcohol and pills to numb her pain, carrying much of her struggle in secret.
Mia opens up about the emotional and psychological abuse that left wounds long after the physical violence ended—and the years it took to rebuild her identity, forgive herself, and recognize that God still had a purpose for her life.
Mesha and Mia also have an honest conversation about faith, shame, motherhood, self-forgiveness, therapy, grief, and why sometimes people don't need another Bible verse—they need someone willing to sit beside them, love them, and hold space while they heal.
Today, Mia uses her story to help other women who have spent their lives being strong for everyone else find their identity, their voice, and their purpose.
You do not have to keep suffering in silence. There is no shame in reaching out for help.
What happens when you grow up around domestic violence and later realize you’ve carried some of those same patterns into your own relationships?
In this powerful episode of Silent No Longer with Mesha Paul, I sit down with Ransom Kong, who shares his journey from growing up in a home filled with domestic violence to recognizing his own learned behaviors and choosing to do the work to change them.
Ransom brings a unique perspective after nearly three decades of work in anger management, domestic violence education, and coaching. Together, we have an open conversation about generational trauma, learned behaviors, accountability, communication, emotional vulnerability, boundaries, self-worth, and the difference between toxic and abusive relationship patterns.
We also get real about dating and relationships after trauma—learning to trust your instincts, recognizing when words and actions don’t match, slowing down emotional investment, and discovering what a healthy connection can actually look like.
This conversation is a reminder that the patterns we learn in childhood can follow us into adulthood—but awareness, accountability, and intentional healing can help us choose something different.
