S1E2: Boys Will Be Boys

In this episode Ricky is pleased that Edward lets him get away with everything - until Derek tells him it means he doesn't care about Ricky. Edward has to show Ricky that his relaxed attitude toward discipline doesn't mean that he doesn't love him.

We also learn in this episode that Derek was kicked out of military school after he looked at the military captain’s wife in the shower. She’s 74 years old for crying out loud. That’s just nasty, Derek.

We also learn of Edward’s troubling relationship with his father (which will continue throughout the course of the show’s run)and the real reason he is hesitant to disciplining Ricky.

We get some cute flirtation between Edward and Kate. His code name Captain Danger over the walkie talkie and Kate’s code name Foxy Lady.

He also picks a rose for her. Aww.

We see Ricky’s awesome bedroom for the first time with his race car bed and he’s got his own bathroom. Plus all kinds of cool toys. Who wouldn’t want to be sent to their room if they had one like that.

Derek’s jerk factor scale low end Margaux Kramer vs higher end Nellie Oleson. This episode for telling Ricky his father doesn’t punish him because he doesn’t love him is on the low end Margaux Kramer. That’s just like her from Season 1.

The one thing I got in trouble for that I can recall at Ricky’s age is calling a 900 hotline number for Soap Opera Spoilers for the show All My Children when I was 11. Ran up the phone bill and my Dad had the number blocked.

Next week we'll meet Edward's father and Ricky's Grandfather in S1E3: Grandfather Stratton, which aired on October 9, 1982.

In this episode Ricky wants to meet his grandfather, but finds that Edward has no interest in seeing his father - an attitude that is definitely mutual. Knowing how important it was for him to know his father, Ricky devises a plan to reconcile the two.
