Beauty was in the eye of a different sorta Beholder in our text. He takes one look at a different kind of ‘rock,’ and He sees a masterpiece! Jesus isn’t simply giving one of the friends He’ll pal around with a funny sounding nickname. No despite Simon’s frailty, his nickname signals Jesus’ vision for what Simon will become. Peter.
The Apostle Paul told the Ephesians: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph 2:10).
What masterpiece are you becoming? That God is fearfully and wonderfully making you out to be? What sorta ‘Peter’ (Cephas) has Jesus pronounced over your life?
