Hows the weeks been
Fighting with HMRC - His Majesty's Revenue and Customs
about the sinners music end of year accounts
As a limited company We have to submit end of year accounts
We also have to submit quarterly VAT accounts
And we use accounting software to help with this
So we use QuickFile for this so its free for businesses that have unto 1000 transactions per year
We fall into the 1001+ category so its £60+ VAT a year
In comparison
Quickbooks goes from £16 to £123 a month
£192 to £1476 + VAT
Xero £15 to £55 a month
Sage is £18 to £59 a month
So as from the 1st April HMRC have implemented Make Tax Digital
For small businesses and sole traders
Now we’re VAT registered so for years we’ve been using QuickFile to submit our VAT returns
Now the downside of QuickFile is that it isn’t compliant with submitting our end of year accounts so we’ve always used the HRMC software portal it was crap but functional same as their PAYE software Basic PAYE which is a very badly written piece of software
So I came to file my last years accounts to find out that I now can’t use HMRC’s online software I have to buy a 3rd party commercial software so I did some research and it seems their isn’t any free software But I did find
Tiny tax whereby for 1 company you can submit your accounts for £59+VAT
and while I’m ranting once a year we have to submit to Companies House a confirmation statement the fee for filing this statement use to be £13 its just a form saying nothing has changed in the year last it now costs £50 to submit online and £110 in paper
THe UK government are having a laugh no wonder there are so many people trying to avoid paying tax
Started working on the music for a dance production which is due in June
Went to a couple of exhibitions at the Holborn Gallery a photo exhibition on Don McCullin and Sandra Rodes
Also when to the Haywood gallery at the south bank centre in london for 2 artists

Main Topic
Book review of Kevin rowland
On the 15th March 1980 Dexy midnight runners released Geno I did got out an buy it and it took 2 months to get to no:1 and while it was climbing up the charts Dexy’s were on tour across the UK with the straight to the heart tour .
I was in an 11 piece Funk /Soul band called Motel out of York when Pat the drummer rang me at work mid afternoon and said are you free tonight we’ve a gig supporting Dexy midnight runners can you be at Alcuin dinning hall for 6:30pm - Alcuin was one of the colleges at York University amazingly I would end up having my office in Alcuin college for 16 years when I was their as a lecturer.
I got to the gig just as Dexy finished sound checking the road crew were great and was the band except Kevin Rowland who wander around with a scowl on his face
We play the crowd loved us and we did 2 encores after We’d moved our gear off the stage I was walking up to the shared dressing room and Kevin Rowland passed me on the stairs and muttered 2 fucking encores bunch of amateurs - I was speechless
Now that tour is covered in the book York isn’t mentioned but let me read a small paragraph
So it wasn’t personal Kevin was being a dick to everyone and that comes across in the book its everyones fault not his faulty he went bankrupt thats his managers and accounts fault
You could say the writing was on the wall when 5 members of the original Dexys left because of him and the same happened with the 2nd version of Dexys
The book has left me not liking Kevin Rowland and it seems clear that he has mellowed over time but he has diminished my eyes and I not know if I want to keep all of the Dexy records I have maybe I’ll just keep the greatest hits and flog the rest
