By Admiral Jameson’s order, we set course for Starbase 24 to join the Federation delegation in formalizing relations with the Cardassian Union. Twenty years have passed since first contact — twenty years of brittle frost between us, never fully thawed, never fully broken. Now Ambassador Sarek leads the effort to carve a path through that frozen terrain. If any mind can find the stillness beneath the storm, it is his.
We are to meet Legate Demarak and his cadre of ambassadors. Cardassians speak warmly, but their warmth is like a desert wind — it dries the air, but it does not melt the ice.
