Budapest Day 7

AMA plans the arrival to Budapest early in the morning around breakfast for those who want to see the cities of Buda and Pest from the river vantage. Other times we cruised at night to make it to the city for a full day. I was actually surprised just how much sailing we did during day light hours. We often could sit and view the beauty and nature of the Danube from many vantage points including top deck, lounge, front of ship or our French Balcony room.

Vienna

The AMALea arrived in Vienna early in the morning in the midst of clearing fog on Day 5. With a full day and evening planned in the city of Johan Strauss, known for great composers, beautiful architecture, and museums I was particularly excited for this day. 

Once again we had chosen a bike tour to see the city, the most active of all levels offered by AMA. This was a busy bike tour through winding streets, on and off designated bike paths with many stops to allow the group remain together. Our guides were fantastic as AMA provided a lecturer and a rear rider to watch over us while crossing roads. We biked to and past many iconic landmarks of Vienna such as the Opera House, Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs, St. Stephen’s Cathedral just to name a few. A real treat was riding by the Austrian University of Economics to view the unique architecture built around 2010 as part of the college’s expansion. It currently has 200,000 students with the cost for most European students of 44 Euro per year! American’s can attend for just 1750 Euro for an entire year.

 Known as the Coronation City, where 16 kings and queens were crowned in the church of St. Martin’s Cathedral. I must confess that to go from Vienna to Bratislava was anticlimactic which isn’t a fair comparison I know. Few cities in the world compare to the beauty of Vienna. Having not spent time with the other two couples in the group we decided to do the gentle walking tour with them. It lasted about 1.5 hours and was informative but we only went into one church, it was mostly an overview tour. The general consensus in our group was that the walking tours provided a lot of explanation about the exterior of buildings and history, but we would have liked to see more of the interiors.

As these are one day stopovers I understand the limited time constraints of the tours.

Traveling from west to east on the Danube our next two ports, city centers were Linz followed by Durnstein both in Austria. Again with AMA we had many options of places to visit. For example, in the city of Linz we had the following options:

• Day tours of either Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov, both via motor coach followed by a gentle walking tour with 3 hours of free time to explore the cities on your own.

• Stay in Linz and take a bike tour. 

• Walking Tour of the city of Media Arts in Linz.

• Also, a fast paced active walk with the activity fitness leader.

• An afternoon whisky distillery tour.

• Free time in Linz that evening.

What a value to have all those options included in your cruise! I didn’t mention the morning stretch and yoga classes, 10 bikes always parked on the shore ready to borrow and active walking tours led by the fitness/activity instructor.

Despite the usual fatigue from a red eye flight we went to explore the town with a lunch stop at Hofbräuhaus to listen to live polka band performance, sample the beer, and have traditional german food. The two other couples, Carol’s parents and aunt/uncle are non drinkers they did enjoy the festive atmosphere of a friday lunch crowd and the last day of October. While 24 hours is enough to get the feel of a city and what there is to see, you always want more and we will come back for an extended visit. Munich is very friendly and when you see everyone out in the afternoon socializing at the outdoor beer gardens and restaurants you are reminded what makes trips to Europe unique to travel in the states.
