Sir Peter Gluckman: PM's former science advisor urges parents to consider cost of caesareans

Listen Later

The Prime Minister's former chief science advisor is urging parents and doctors to consider the possible costs of elective caesareans.
Sir Peter Gluckman HAS been involved in international research which has found babies born via non-medically necessary caesareans are more likely to be overweight in infancy, and possibly longer term.
Gluckman told Mike Hosking these babies miss out on the important bacteria and stress of birth.
"The rising popularity of caesars by choice is concerning, and parents and health professionals should consider it carefully. This is not the case for emergency caesareans, and people should not hesitate if it's medically warranted."
