WEEK 7.7 Discussion questions below.
In Episode 49 of A Slow Journey Through John, Nick and Jamie explore the wedding at Cana from John Chapter 2, where Jesus performs his first miracle by turning water into wine. We discuss the symbolism and deeper meanings of Jesus's actions, the cultural significance of weddings in ancient times, and the transformative power of Jesus revealed through this miracle. The episode also delves into the compassionate nature of Jesus, the importance of obedience, and the idea that God cares about both the big and small issues in our lives. Added bonus: we share our personal wedding disaster story.

JOURNAL PROMPTS / SMALL GROUP GUIDE
Read through John 2:1-12. Share what the passage reveals to you about God, about humanity, and about following Jesus. Then discuss the following questions:
1. We discuss how we often picture Jesus as stern and serious, making it difficult to imagine him laughing or celebrating at a wedding. How has your image of Jesus's personality evolved over time, and how might a more complete view of his character affect your relationship with him?
2. Jesus's first recorded miracle addressed what seemed like a minor social crisis - running out of wine at a wedding. What "small" concerns have you hesitated to bring to God, and how might this story change your approach to prayer?
3. The passage shows Mary telling the servants "Do whatever he tells you," resulting in them witnessing a miracle. Where in your life might you be hesitating to fully obey what Jesus is telling you to do?
4. Note that Jesus chose to perform this miracle quietly, allowing the bridegroom to receive the credit and preserve his honour. Where might God be working quietly in your life, behind the scenes, that you haven't recognized?
5. The transformation of water meant for purification rituals into wine symbolized a new way of relating to God. What "old wineskins" in your spiritual life might need to be replaced with new ones to fully experience what Jesus offers?
End your time by taking a minute to listen to the Holy Spirit and prayerfully choose an “I will…” intention. One small, practical step you’ll take this week to put your learning into practice.

SJTJs a year-long contemplative journey through the Gospel of John. We invite you into Scripture, reflection, and intentional practices to help you pause, listen, and respond to God’s love in transformative ways.
Weekdays are 10(ish)-minute devotionals to help you abide in the presence of Jesus and the Word of God, learn by studying the Scriptures, and go with intention to love the world.
Weekends we release a short prayer of examen reflecting on the previous week and/or a longer teaching podcast that more deeply explores the themes and implications of John.
Occasionally we have an excursus episode, which is basically an extra episode addressing listener questions or certain topics that require extended exploration.
