Democracies rely on expertise. The well-being of a large population relies on a division of labor, leading to distinct professions. The relationship between an expert and non-expert is dependent on the foundation of mutual respect and trust. Without this, society becomes a casualty, falling to mob rule. When we refuse to recognize our shortcomings, our functional citizenship collapses, and public discourse gets polluted by unearned respect for unfounded opinions.
