Through the prophet Jeremiah, God told the Israelites who were living abroad to pray and work for the peace and prosperity of the city/nation where He had sent them into exile, because its welfare would determine their own (see Jeremiah 29:7). That can help us understand the weight of our own civic responsibility today. But if we aren’t careful, we can overemphasize civic responsibility and lose sight of God’s promises and sovereignty.
