  • Anti-depressants increase light sensitivity and impact circadian rhythms

Work publised in Psychopharmacology last month from Assoc Prof Sean Cain's group at Monash University shows that the SSRI citalopram increases sensitivity of the circadian system to light. This is an important finding that has major implications for the treatment of depression, and may explain the relatively poor response to SSRIs in people with depression and eveningness type. In this interview Sean discusses his research and it's implications for the management of depression.

Qnatas has also established a research collaboration with the Charles Perkins Centre at The University of Sydney to continue to refine their product. In this episode Phil Capps, Head of Customer Product & Service Development talks with David Cunnington (Sleep Physician) about what Qantas is doing to reduce the effects of ultra-long-haul flying on health and jet lag.

But, the Entrain app developed by a team from the University of Michigan including Dr Olivia Walch, can solve that problem for you. Just put in the details of your travel and it will tell you when to get light exposure before and during your travels to help you arrive at your destination with your body clock already adjusted. In this episode, Olivia talks with David Cunnington (Sleep Physician) about the Entrain app, it's development and using mathematics to model the circadian system.
