Selflessness. It’s not about ignoring yourself. In fact, true acts of selflessness, true acts of altruism require that the individual doing the work be utterly saturated in self-care. Think of it this way. If my life is a cup and I’m pouring into others from my cup, eventually that cup is empty. That serves no one. As one of my leadership coaches, Judith Rich, suggests – instead my cup gets to be full and then overflow and it is from that overflow, from abundance, where my giving can begin. That concept lies deeply at the heart of how today’s guest moves through the world. Sloane Davidson is the Founder and CEO of Hello Neighbor, a non-profit based in Pittsburgh, PA that provides a safe and smooth entry for new “neighbors” coming to the US from places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, myriad countries in Africa and so on. She and I met “back in the day” when she was working a the crossroads of philanthropy and digital marketing. Her site, the Causemopolitan and the work she did making sure organizations that were doing good in the world, also could do well and have their voices heard. She was a constant voice at the World Economic Forum in Davos, at the United Nations and in 2015 she returned to her hometown, not sure what she’d do, but knowing that she was meant to help people. The early days of her work had Sloane exhausted and overextended, leaving little energy for her family or herself. She found the grounding of her new direction and the biggest lesson of all about ensuring her own cup was full, from a lovable shelter pup, named Piper.
