In 2014 a group of 43 male students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College went missing after being attacked by local police forces. It is believed that the police handed the students over to a local drug cartel, which subsequently killed them. The case sparked widespread protests and international outrage, highlighting issues of corruption, impunity, and human rights violations in Mexico.
