Small Business Owners - It is not cool to "Shop" your competitors

So you're building a small business. Maybe you're starting your own portrait studio. You've got several potential competitors in the area. So you decide to call them pretending to be a customer and learn more about their price model and services. Not cool!
Over the years I've been "shopped" more times than I care to count by other people looking to compete in the market space I'm in. I have no problem with competition, but I do have an issue when people pretend to be customers thinking they'll get more information out of me. Seriously folks, if you're starting up your small business, messing with other business owners time is not the right foot to set forward.
If you need help starting up your business you'd be surprised how many "competitors" might just be willing to talk to you about their business. I've talked to many photographers and web designers over the years about what I do, and what they want to to. 9 times out of 10 they're no threat to my market space, and often I find what they're doing interesting as well. So, if you're starting up don't be a tool and "shop" your competitors. Instead be honest, and ask other business owners if they'd mind a conversation with you about what you're doing.
