From the director that brought you Gremlins, the hosts present you with… pretty much Gremlins but with GI Joes. It’s difficult to make a children’s war film that doesn’t glorify violence and has an overarching peaceful message but that’s exactly what the Joe Dante-directed Small Soldiers does. Combining stop-motion, animation and live-action, the film addresses Native American civil liberties and Vietnam opposition protests, all while critiquing American consumerism. Can a film critique imperialism and consumerism while pedaling soldier toys to kids during its promotion?
