Randal is a foreign English teacher in Japan. He works in an all-girls high school that has 5000 students. His class, curated without his knowledge, is made up of the worst 50. Randal ventures into his boss Kawakami’s office, a building under the pines. Randal didn’t know the place was off-limits but once inside, in his street shoes, he doesn’t need to be told. He feels it. Kawikami-san does not plead with Randal to stay, nor does he offer any adjustment to the classroom situation. Randal feels cornered into giving his resignation notice.

Randal has not been a model guest in his host country. In the state he finds himself in, he draws a conclusion: actions have consequences. As he burns the high-school toilet paper, he sees himself behind his cottage that night, beyond the tennis court. Why did he knock on his landlady’s door? Because he was outplayed by circumstance. And it put him under the moon where frogs begin to sing forevermore.
