Deep in the snowy mountains of Nagano, Japan, wild Japanese macaques have mastered winter by soaking in natural hot springs. This is Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, one of the most iconic wildlife spots in Japan.

I drove for hours through icy mountain roads, hiked through a silent winter forest, and finally reached the valley where these monkeys relax in the steam like it’s their private spa. Watching them sit calmly in the onsen while snow falls around them is one of the most peaceful sights you can experience in Japan.

The park opened in 1964 after locals noticed wild monkeys bathing in a nearby ryokan’s hot spring. It’s still the only place in the world where wild monkeys bathe in natural onsen. No cages, no handlers — just an incredible balance between humans and nature.

Arrive early for the full magic: the sound of running water, rising steam, and nothing but monkeys and mountains. By late morning, it turns into a crowd of photographers — but that quiet early moment is unforgettable.
