We summarize and discuss the Grimm’s Brothers story “Snow White & Rose Red” and discuss it. In this story an old woman has two complementary daughters, one of whom stays at home and does chores, and the other who frolics in the fields, but who are also inseparable and spend a lot of time in nature together, even sleeping outside sometimes. They are watched over by what their mother says is a children’s protective spirit. One day a bear terrifies them all but becomes their friend, sheltered by them in winter, and the bear later dispatches a very rude dwarf whose beard the girls had cut repeatedly in freeing him from various traps he’s gotten himself into. The dwarf’s death frees the prince from the spell the wicked diminutive had burdened him with, and the golden-clad prince marries the paragon of purity. We draw parallels with the other more famous Snow White story.
(Sorry about the bad sound on my end. It’s been corrected in future episodes.)
